History

Pursuant to the resolution of the Rector of the Jagiellonian University, the Institute of Informatics was liquidated on January 31, 2014. In place of the liquidated Institute of Computer Science, the Institute of Computer Science and Mathematics was established on February 1, 2014.

The Institute of Computer Science and Mathematics of Jagiellonian University is currently one of the two institutes at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science.

The Institute of Computer Science was established in 1975 (Rector's Order No. 34 of November 20, 1975) from two organizational units of the Institute of Mathematics of Jagiellonian University: the Department of Numerical Methods and the Probability Calculus Department, and two newly created departments: the Department of Applied Mathematics and the Department of Fundamentals of Computer Science. At the beginning, the Institute consisted of six departments: the four above and the Department of Applied Numerical Methods (established in April 1976) and the Department of Humanities Applications (October 1977). In September 1980, the Department of Applied Mathematics was renamed the Department of Optimization and Control Theory. In the years 1994 and 1995 two departments were established: the Department of Discrete Mathematics and the Department of Artificial Intelligence Systems. In 2002, the Department of Artificial Intelligence Systems became the Department of Applied Computer Science. In 2002, a new Department of Algorithmics was established at the Institute. From October 1, 2001 to August 31, 2003, the Institute was part of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science. Since September 1, 2003, the Institute has been a part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. On April 1, 2009, the Department of Numerical Methods was renamed the Department of Computational Mathematics.

The first director of the Institute was Andrzej Zięba, who headed it from January 1, 1976 to March 31, 1976. The next directors were: Stanisław Surma (1976-1979), Franciszek Studnicki (1979-1981), Zdzisław Denkowski (1981-1984), Franciszek Szafraniec (1984-1987), again Zdzisław Denkowski (1987-1990), Jerzy Szwed (1990- 1993), Wit Foryś (1993-1996), Marek Zaionc (1996-1999), Stanisław Migórski (1999-2002 and 2002-2005), Zdzisław Denkowski (2005-2006), and Marek Skomorowski (2006-2008 and 2008-2012). During the last term of office (2012-2014), Stanisław Migórski was the director of the Institute of Computer Science. Currently, the director of the Institute of Computer Science and Mathematics is Marek Skomorowski.

Today

The Institute of Computer Science and Mathematics of Jagiellonian University is known today in Poland for its research and education of students in the field of computer science. It consists of five departments. The Institute employs 35 academics, more than 95% of whom hold a Ph.D. We conduct research in the field of computer science and mathematics. The institute offers several educational programs. The total number of students is around 550 and includes around 500 graduate students and 50 postgraduate students.

Location

The seat of the Institute of Computer Science and Mathematics of the Jagiellonian University is Krakow, one of the oldest cities in Poland, located on the Vistula River in the south of the country. It is about 290 kilometers from Warsaw. Currently, Krakow has approximately 850,000 inhabitants and there are 15 universities in the city. For more information, see the map, or contact iiuj@ii.uj.edu.pl, or write a letter following address: Institute of Informatics, Jagiellonian University, 30-348 Kraków, ul. Łojasiewicza 6.

How others see us

For several years, the editorial offices of popular magazines have commissioned rankings of universities according to the field of study. These rankings are prepared on the basis of surveys conducted among employers and professors or on the basis of questionnaires sent by universities, with data on the number of candidates and students in full-time, evening, and extramural studies, on the number of research workers and their achievements in the form of opened doctoral dissertations, the number of defended doctorates, obtained habilitations, and nominations of professors, the number of publications in national and foreign journals as well as scientific and didactic books published. The results of the rankings are intended to help future students choose a university and a field of study.

In the ranking of Polish universities leading the field of computer science, conducted by Pracownia Badań Społecznych in Sopot commissioned by "Rzeczpospolita" (presented in the newspaper on 29 May 2000 and 3-4 June 2000), the Institute of Computer Science of Jagiellonian University took first place. Similar rankings have been carried out since 2001 by the Polityka and Wprost magazines, and each year they have been publishing collective lists of university rankings since 2001.
